The Volta River Authority (VRA) was established on April 26, 1961 under the Volta River Development Act (Act 46) with the mandate to generate and supply electricity in Ghana. VRA is Ghana's main electricity generator and operates hydroelectric plants at Akosombo and Kpong, as well as thermal power plants at Takoradi, Tema, and Kpone. VRA also operates solar plants at Navrongo and Lawra. The authority supplies bulk power to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), NEDCo, and major industrial customers including mining companies. VRA exports power to Togo and Côte d'Ivoire.
